Files in KoalaChat

KoalaChat lets you attach files to your messages so the AI can read, reference, and discuss them.

Supported File Types

  • Documents: PDFs, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), text files, code files, and more
  • Images: PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, and other common image formats

How It Works

When you send a message with document attachments, Koala processes the files so the AI can read them:

  • PDFs and binary documents (e.g. .docx, .pptx) are scanned using OCR to extract their content.
  • Text-based files (e.g. .txt, .csv, code files) are read directly.
  • Images are sent to the AI as-is — they are always free and do not count toward any document processing limits.

Processing happens when you send a message, not when you upload the file. You can attach and remove files freely without any cost.

Free Document Processing Allowance

Every paid plan includes a free document processing allowance that resets each billing period (monthly or annually, depending on your plan). This covers two things:

Resource

What It Measures

OCR pages

The number of pages scanned from PDFs and binary documents

Document tokens

The total amount of text extracted from all document types

You can check your current usage on the Account page — look for the info icon next to your chat usage bar.

What Happens When You Exceed the Free Allowance

For the vast majority of users, the free allowance is more than enough and you will never be charged extra credits.

If you do exceed your free allowance, extra chat credits may be used when you send messages with large document attachments. Here's how it works:

Per-Message Grace Buffer

Each individual message includes a small grace buffer at no extra cost:

  • 2 OCR pages free per message
  • 5,000 document tokens free per message

This means small documents attached to a message are typically free even after your monthly allowance is used up.

Overage Rates

If a single message exceeds the per-message grace buffer, extra chat credits are used at roughly these rates:

  • ~1 chat credit per 10 OCR pages
  • ~1 chat credit per 20,000 document tokens

Example

If you send a message with a 15-page PDF after your free allowance is used up:

  • 2 of those pages are covered by the per-message grace buffer
  • The remaining 13 pages would use approximately 1–2 extra chat credits

Tips

  • Images are always free — attach as many reference images as you like.
  • Small documents are usually free — even after hitting your allowance, the per-message grace buffer covers most small files.
  • Credits are only used on send — uploading and removing attachments costs nothing.
